Kwai Chan was working in lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001. He saw New York’s Bravest respond with selfless dedication to rescue people trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center.
During that moment Kwai realized that he needed to change his life and choose a purposeful career. He soon signed up at an FDNY recruitment event at Grand Street Park.
Today, Kwai works for Engine Company 55 in Manhattan serving the same neighborhood where he grew up. “It’s a special feeling to be able to do that, to give back to my friends and family here,” he states.
“Becoming a Firefighter is not an opportunity that people of ethnicity are necessarily aware of, but this is a career that should be considered,” he goes on to say. “This is a great job and you have to work hard. Don’t think you can’t do it. You just have to be motivated and challenge yourself.”
