It was a day full of women empowerment and information about serving as a New York City Firefighter for our Firefighter Candidates on June 29 while they trained with our Women’s Outreach Coordinator Firefighter Jackie-Michelle Martinez, as well as with many of our women Fire Officers and Firefighters at our Academy on Randall’s Island. The ladies from our Exploring Program also joined us for training to continue their early efforts to learn more about our fire suppression career.
“The FDNY is proud of its diversity and we want each of you to know that you’re welcome to join this great Department just like all of the women Firefighters in this auditorium today,” said FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “We’re very proud that our Department is looking more and more like the great city it serves and we will continue to celebrate the growing diversity within our ranks.”
“I love my job and I want to make sure that women get the opportunity to love this job as much as I do,” added Martinez. “Today is all about educating these young women about what we do on a regular basis, so they can learn more about this great career and know that they can work as a New York City Firefighter just like all of the women Firefighters here today.”
