Firefighter
The community counts on FDNY Firefighters to respond to emergency situations and protect the public. This includes extinguishing fires, technical rescues, responding to biological and chemical threats and more. Firefighters are depended on to promote fire safety and enforce fire safety standards.
EMS
FDNY EMS includes EMTs and Paramedics. People’s lives often depend on the quick reaction and medical expertise of EMTs and Paramedics. EMS members respond to emergency calls, perform medical services in the field and transport patients to hospitals. There are great opportunities to advance in this profession. Paramedic is a promotional opportunity only available to FDNY EMS members.
Dispatcher
FDNY Fire Alarm Dispatchers are a call away from saving a life. They receive calls from citizens reporting fires and medical emergencies and provide them with the correct assistance. Their responsibilities include dispatching fire units to a scene, based on the condition and adjusting or relocating fire companies as needed. Dispatchers also operate Department radio and voice alarm systems to announce alarms.
Fire Protection Inspector
FDNY Fire Protection Inspectors play an important role in protecting people and property by ensuring that building safety codes are met. Fire Protection Inspectors also test and inspect fire protection and fire extinguishing equipment to ensure that these items are in good working order. Fire Cadet
FDNY Fire Cadet is a new rewarding career path that educates New Yorkers ages 18-26 about FDNY operations and provides them with leadership training. The two-year apprenticeship program includes extensive classroom, field and fitness instruction, the opportunity to take the Promotion to Firefighter exam and more.
Civilian (Administrative)
Civilian positions perform work supporting FDNY activities. Opportunities range from administrative duties to technical support to Operations.
