October 31, 2024In honor of the 20th anniversary of Captain Vernon A. Richard High School for Fire and Life Safety, Join FDNY is celebrating the alumni who have joined the Department.
Swain Thomas, a member of the inaugural graduating class of 2008, became the first graduate of the high school to join the firefighter ranks in 2013.
“We had instructors who were firefighters and EMTs for the Fire Department who taught the class and would show us things,” said Swain. “Having those people around definitely made a difference because the instructors would tell you how the real world works and what the job entails. I got insight into the Fire Department prior to actually getting on the Fire Department. The instructors always talked about camaraderie and teamwork, and I definitely saw that. Everybody has a responsibility to each other.”
He worked as an FDNY #EMT for several years before entering Probationary Firefighter School. Upon completion, he was assigned to Engine 202 in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and then transferred to Ladder 101. He later moved to Ladder 103, just a few blocks from his alma mater, and is now stationed at Rescue 5 on Staten Island. When Thomas visits the high school, he enjoys sharing his experiences with students, emphasizing the incredible job satisfaction and the personal and professional growth he’s achieved. “Without the school, the path that I was on would have been different. The high school was challenging and life-changing.”
