Assistant Chief of EMS Alvin Suriel Makes History With New Rank
October 15, 2019EMT Semper: ‘My Love and Passion for Teaching Motivates Me’
November 5, 2019E MS Academy Instructor Gilbert Ramos has served as an EMT in the FDNY since 2003. He became inspired to join our Department after September 11th because he wanted to make an even bigger difference in his career. He previously served as an EMS instructor in the private sector.
Join FDNY: What drives you to come to our Bureau of Training daily to teach?
Gilbert Ramos: If I help to change one life as an instructor, in turn, I can help an entire family. Everybody pays attention to the ripple and nobody pays attention to the drop that goes in that bucket. My career is about helping people.
Join FDNY: What pointers would you give to someone who is looking to join our Department?
GR: As an instructor, I’m teaching a skill, but you still need to have the compassion to be successful in this profession. That’s the side of the job that isn’t taught from a textbook and it’s something that I think people who want to work in this career should have. You grow on this job in so many ways and really learn how important it is to help people and you end up having a bunch of brothers and sisters along the way. We’re a big family here.
Join FDNY: What’s one of your greatest accomplishments as an instructor?
GR: I get great joy from helping our students learn about this career. Having the opportunity to help them become the best first responders that they can be is one of my greatest accomplishments here.
