January 22, 2025Today, we join the nation in celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we pause to remember his activism, teachings and commitment to equality, meet one of our members who is helping to keep his dream alive through their service.
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service, equality, and standing up for what’s right has always inspired me,” said newly promoted Lieutenant Melissa Bennett. “As a Firefighter, Mentor, Recruiter, and now Lieutenant, I strive to embody those values in everything I do—whether it’s helping others, inspiring the next generation, or encouraging people to pursue their dreams.”
Reflecting on her promotion, Bennett remarked, “This achievement is not just a personal milestone but also a reminder of the importance of creating opportunities for others. I want young people to see themselves in leadership roles and understand that they can make a real difference in their communities.”
From her beginnings as an EMT in Bedford-Stuyvesant to her roles in the Office of Recruitment & Retention, the Firefighter Candidate Mentorship Program (FFCMP), and as a founding member of Squad 8 on Staten Island, Lieutenant Bennett has consistently given back to the city that raised her and to the Department that continues to recognize her dedication.
“Looking ahead, I hope to honor Dr. King’s dream by leading with fairness, uplifting others, and serving my community with heart and purpose,” she said.
