May 10, 2022Bureau of Fire Prevention is Hiring Assistant Electrical Engineers
May 13, 2022Today, meet Engine 227 Probationary Firefighter Khaleeq Baum, a first-generation FDNY member who graduated from the Fire Academy this past March.
“I gained interest in the FDNY when I attended an event at college for fire safety protocols in 2014. We tried on some bunker gear and went through certain scenarios. The moment I put on the bunker gear, something just felt right and I knew this was what I wanted to be,” said Baum. “Working at the firehouse is an educational experience. Every firehouse has its own identity, and the members of the firehouse are eager to teach you the lay of the land. It is a family environment and it is an honor learning how to keep myself and the ones around me safe. Midway through the Academy, I was appointed to be a Squad Leader. It was difficult at first, transitioning from following the pack to now leading it, but with the help of my squad, I was able to do my job to the best of my abilities.”
Baum is from Bedford-Stuyvesant and he now resides in Flatbush. He said he’s enjoying giving back to the borough he grew up in by working at Engine 227.
“I worked very hard to get this job. As a Firefighter Candidate, I attended several Mobile Academy events, CPAT Training, as well as events held by the FDNY Vulcan Society,” added Baum. “To anyone interested in joining this Department, take advantage of all the resources given to you. Attend the Mobile Academies, check out JoinFDNY.com, live a healthy lifestyle and always stay ahead of the game.”
