Dr. Christine Kakoulas
Chief medical officer, BHS

1. Please introduce yourself—your name, your title and the year you joined the FDNY.
My name is Dr. Christine Kakoulas. I began my career with the FDNY in October 2020 as a fire medical officer, providing medical leadership and supporting the health and safety of uniformed members. I was promoted to chief medical officer of the Bureau of Health Services in December 2025.[
2. Where are you currently assigned, and what are your main responsibilities?
I am currently assigned to the Bureau of Health Services. My responsibilities include performing comprehensive physical exams for firefighters, EMTs and paramedics; treating members in the clinic when they are injured; and evaluating prospective candidates during their pre-employment medical examinations for both the Fire Academy and the EMS Academy. My role focuses on ensuring medical readiness, safety and compliance with FDNY health standards.
3. What inspired you to choose a life of public service with the FDNY?
I was a medical resident at St. Vincent’s Hospital on 9/11 and witnessed firsthand the courage and sacrifice of the FDNY. That day left a lasting impression on me and shaped my commitment to care for those who dedicate their lives to protecting others. Joining the FDNY has been both an honor and a calling—a way to give back by supporting the health and well-being of the extraordinary men and women who serve this city with bravery and heart.
4. Can you share one of your most memorable moments on the job?
I’ll never forget my first multi-alarm fire. Seeing our members work together to protect others in the most demanding circumstances gives me a deeper understanding of the challenges they face and continues to shape how I care for their health and well-being each day.
5. When you hear the words “We Are FDNY,” what does that mean to you?
To me, “We Are FDNY” means being part of a family built on courage, compassion and service. As a doctor, I’m proud to care for the firefighters and EMTs who dedicate their lives to protecting others. Supporting their health and well-being allows me to give back to the people who keep our city safe.
6. What would you say is your “superpower”—a strength or skill you bring to your work?
My superpower is my ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I value building trust through empathy, respect and genuine care. I strive to make every interaction a reminder that compassion and connection are at the heart of good medicine.
7. How does your role help advance the FDNY’s mission of public safety?
As a physician for the FDNY, my role supports the Department’s mission of safety by ensuring that our members remain healthy, resilient and fit for the demanding work they do every day. I provide direct medical care, guidance and preventive health advice to help firefighters and EMS personnel recover from injuries, manage ongoing health concerns and maintain the physical readiness required to protect others. By caring for those who serve on the front lines, I help sustain the strength and safety of the entire Department.
