Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day and Freedom Day, it is also a time where we recognize the important contributions Black Americans have made and continue to make in our nation.
Last year, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday. This year, for the first time in history, it is observed as a paid holiday in New York City.
Today, the FDNY joins our country in celebrating this important day. Watch along as three of our members, who have all made history in our Department, discuss what this holiday means to them. #HappyJuneteenth!
