August 11, 2023On August 5th, the Firefighter Candidate Mentorship Program’s 9th Annual Mentor-Mentee Day in the Park was held at the Fire Academy on Randall’s Island. Firefighter candidates got a chance to meet their assigned mentors face-to-face and have a chance to look around the Fire Academy. They participated in fun activities, games and took part in some of the physical training they will undergo as Probationary Firefighters.
“Watching so many Firefighter candidates interacting with their mentors and getting familiar with the Fire Academy is wonderful. We always say the FDNY is a family, and I think it means a lot to the candidates to experience that firsthand. Having a mentor can be key to someone’s success. I know our mentors are top-notch and invested in the success of the candidates,” said Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.
“The mentees are at the very beginning of their journey, so the mentors are here to encourage them, keep them motivated, and answer any questions about what it takes to get through the hiring process,” said Jéneen Gilliam, Chief Strategy Officer. “Our mentors are extremely passionate. Oftentimes, they themselves had a mentor so they are here giving back and paying it forward.”
